New York Gov. Kathy Hochul stressed earlier this year she would be cracking down on auto insurance fraud statewide. Several months later, her office has announced more than a dozen related arrests.
A joint investigative partnership between the New York State Police (NYSP) and the state's Division of Financial Services (DFS) resulted in 16 auto insurance fraud arrests from Long Island to western New York, Hochul's office announced on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The fraudulent claims amounted to nearly $500,000 and resulted in 31 charges, including 29 felonies and two misdemeanors.
"Auto insurance is not a victimless crime," Hochul said. "Every staged crash, fraudulent claim and criminal scheme ultimately drives up costs for New Yorkers who play by the rules."
The governor directed a task force consisting of NYSP, DFS, the state Department of Motor Vehicles and the state's Division of Criminal Justice Services earlier this year to better tackle auto insurance fraud. New York's Fiscal Year 2027 budget also included several auto insurance reforms to combat fraud throughout the state.
"These investigations can be complex and often involve individuals who deliberately attempt to conceal their activity through false claims, staged incidents and other fraudulent conduct," said NYSP Superintendent Steven G. James. "By combining the investigative capabilities of the State Police with the specialized expertise of DFS, we are identifying these schemes, building stronger cases and holding those responsible accountable."
