Efforts are underway to restore three century-old pedestrian bow bridges in Rochester's Genesee Valley Park, a long-sought preservation project aimed at repairing deteriorating historic structures that connect major regional trail systems.
Originally named South Park, Genesee Valley Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Between 1916 and 1919, three pedestrian bridges were constructed to accommodate the Erie Canal being rerouted through the park.
Two bridges are located east of Red Creek, while a third western bridge serves as a key connection among the Erie Canalway Trail, Genesee Valley Greenway and Genesee Riverway Trail.
The Rochester Olmsted Parks Alliance is among the organizations serving on a community advisory committee guiding the restoration
effort.
According to the alliance, repairs to the bridges are long overdue. “For years advocates have raised awareness of the state of the bridges. Erosion, and deterioration are evident on the bridge decking, railings and abutments,” said Maureen Duggan, president of the Rochester Olmsted Parks Alliance.
With support from Genesee Transportation Council and the City of Rochester, Monroe County has commissioned a federally funded study. The study will:
- Analyze the ownership and maintenance structure
- Provide preliminary estimates for restoration
- Suggest construction funding sources
While funding for construction is not yet secured, the alliance is hopeful the study will be an important first step to improving the bridges.
