A pair of defensive stands keyed LeRoy/Caledonia-Mumford's 28-24 win over East Rochester-Gananda in a season-opening game for both teams on Friday.

Already trailing by a score, the Rivals were backed up to their own goal line when junior defensive back Austyn Silvernail intercepted a pass to the flat and returned it 89 yards for a pick-six.

LeRoy/Cal-Mum didn't trail again, but its lead was in jeopardy in the fourth quarter. East Rochester-Gananda threatened inside the Rivals' 5-yard line, but a fourth down pass from quarterback Robbie Dettman to Owen Munding was stuffed at the goal line on a tackle from Donovan Gaillard.

Jude Christ, who took over at quarterback when starter Brady McClurg was unable to return in the second half due to injury,

scored two touchdowns for the Rivals (1-0).
