About 8.2 million New Yorkers are expected to receive one-time state energy rebate checks beginning in September under a $1 billion program aimed at helping residents offset rising utility costs.
The payments, known as Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate, or POWER, checks, were approved as part of New York's 2026-27 state budget. State officials
estimate about 8.2 million New Yorkers will receive a payment.How much will New Yorkers receive?
The amount depends on a taxpayer's filing status and income reported on their 2024 New York state income tax return, according to a news release from Gov. Kathy Hochul.
Eligible residents may receive:
- $200 for married couples filing jointly with income below $150,000.
- $150 for married couples filing jointly with income between $150,000 and $300,000.
- $100 for qualifying single filers with income below $150,000.
Single filers, heads of household and certain other taxpayers may qualify for the $100 payment, depending on their income and filing status.
Who qualifies for a POWER rebate check?
According
to state guidance, recipients must:
- Have filed a timely New York state resident income tax return for tax year 2024.
- Have been a full-time New York resident in 2024.
- Meet the program's income requirements.
- Not have been claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer's return.
Eligibility is based on tax information already on file with the state, so eligible residents do not need to submit a separate application.

No. The rebate checks will be issued automatically to eligible New Yorkers.
When will the rebate checks arrive?
The checks will be mailed to eligible New Yorkers. State officials expect the payments to be distributed between September and December.
