New York ranks second in the nation for quantum technology businesses, research groups and patents, according to a new state-commissioned study that outlines opportunities to expand the emerging industry.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the findings, which identified 134 operating entities, 219 research groups and 734 patent families connected to quantum technology across New York.
New York plans $360 million investment in quantum technology
The study, commissioned by Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology and Innovation, found New York has capabilities spanning the quantum technology industry, from research and manufacturing to commercial applications. Only California ranked higher across all three measures.
New York is investing $300 million in a Quantum Research and Innovation Hub at Stony
Brook University and has allocated $60 million in the fiscal 2027 budget to establish up to four regional quantum technology commercialization hubs.
The regional hubs would help researchers and businesses bring new technologies to market and provide incubators, mentorship and access to quantum computing resources for startups.
Study projects billions in economic activity
The study estimates the state's $360 million investment in the Stony Brook hub and regional hubs could support $2.3 billion to $5 billion in economic activity and 7,200 to 10,100 job-years through 2036. A job-year represents one full-time job supported for one year.
The report also identifies opportunities to improve collaboration among researchers, manufacturers and potential customers to strengthen New York's position in the industry.
Quantum technology uses principles of physics to process information and take measurements in ways that could improve fields including health care, cybersecurity, transportation and advanced manufacturing.
