Rochester homeowners 65 or older can attend free city workshops in September to learn whether they qualify for property tax exemptions and other tax relief programs.
The purpose of the workshops is to help eligible seniors take advantage of tax exemptions that can make it more affordable to remain in their homes.
Under New York State Real Property Tax Law, eligible homeowners age 65 and older may qualify for a property tax exemption of up to 50% of their home's assessed value for city, county and school taxes.
Those who attend the workshop will receive one-on-one assistance, learn about eligibility and what documents are required to apply.
In addition to the Senior Citizen Tax Exemption
program, city staff will also provide information about the Enhanced STAR property tax exemption or credit program. Staff will help residents determine which benefits they may qualify for.
Do I qualify for the Senior Citizen Tax Exemption program?
To qualify for the Senior Citizen Tax Exemption, applicants generally must:
- Be at least 65 years old by Dec. 31, 2027. For a jointly owned property, at least one spouse or sibling owner must meet the age requirement.
- Own and occupy the property as their primary residence.
- Meet income eligibility requirements. In Rochester, the amount of the exemption is based on household income, with homeowners earning up to $58,400 annually potentially qualifying for a partial exemption.
- Eligible homeowners must apply and renew their exemption annually.
The deadline to apply for the Senior Citizen Tax Exemption program is Feb. 1, 2027.
When and where are the workshops?
The first workshop will be held at Rochester Community Sports Complex located at 460 Oaks Street on Tuesday, Sept. 1 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
The second workshop will be held at City Hall Atrium located at 30 Church Street on Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
What do I need for the workshop?
Residents attending a workshop should bring documentation including:
- Proof of age, such as a birth certificate, driver's license or passport.
- Proof of income, including 2025 federal income tax returns or year-end 1099 income statements.
- Proof of property ownership, if requested.
Those who cannot attend a workshop or have questions about eligibility are encouraged to call the city's Senior Exemption Hotline at 585-428-6994 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or for more information visit www.cityofrochester.gov/Assessment.
