One person died following an early morning house fire on Avenue D in Rochester, according to the Rochester Fire Department.
Early morning blaze
Emergency responders were called to 141 Avenue D around 3:40 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2, for a reported structure fire with flames coming from the rear of the residence, said Lt. Howard Villegas of the Rochester Fire Department.
Four people inside the home safely escaped, but one adult remained inside, Villegas said. Firefighters located the person on the first floor and removed them from the home.
Adult dies from injuries
The person rescued from the house was taken to an area hospital for treatment but later died from injuries suffered in the fire, Villegas said.
The person's name was not released.
"The Rochester Fire Department extends its condolences to
the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life," Villegas said.
One Rochester firefighter also was injured while battling the fire but is expected to recover, according to the fire department.
No smoke alarms in home
Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 35 minutes, officials said.
The home did not have smoke alarms at the time of the fire, according to the Rochester Fire Department.
The fire was determined to be accidental and was caused by unattended cooking, Villegas said.
"This tragic incident serves as an important reminder to never leave cooking unattended and to ensure that working smoke alarms are installed on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas," he said.
