Two people were seriously injured Saturday night when an all-terrain vehicle collided with an SUV in Ontario County, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.
The crash happened around 11:10 p.m. Aug. 8 on Gauss Road in the town of East Bloomfield. Deputies and New York State Police responded to the scene.
What happened in the crash?
A 2020 Toyota RAV4 was traveling east on Gauss Road when the driver moved onto the shoulder to yield to emergency vehicles responding to an unrelated incident, investigators said.
An ATV also was traveling east at a high rate of speed. The ATV slowed but was unable to avoid the SUV, resulting in a collision, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The ATV left the south shoulder of the road, traveled through a grassy ditch and across a driveway,
then went over an embankment and rolled to the bottom.
The two ATV occupants, ages 20 and 19, were ejected and found several feet from the ATV.
Both sustained serious injuries and were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment. The occupants of the SUV were not injured.
Road closed during investigation
Gauss Road was closed between Oakmount Road and County Road 40 while investigators examined the crash.
The Ontario County crash reconstruction team assisted with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Canandaigua Emergency Squad, Mercy Flight and fire departments from East Bloomfield, Bristol and Cheshire also responded.
