Monroe County Department of Transportation is continuing development on its Active Transportation Plan and seeks community input.
In 2023, Monroe County Department of Transportation launched the first active plan in partnership with Genesee Transportation Council to provide a more efficient transportation network for pedestrians and cyclists.
What is an Active Transportation Plan?
The county's website details the Active Transportation Plan's purpose.
"The Plan strikes a balance between several community planning priorities, including racial equity/social justice, sustainability, and accessibility," the website states. "A central goal of the Monroe County CATP is to identify equitable active transportation solutions and provide a roadmap for the County to improve the active transportation infrastructure."
Other benefits outlined in the plan include:
- Improved safety, access and connectivity for all modes of travel.
- Opportunities and methods to enhance pedestrian/bicycle infrastructure.
- Mitigation of the likelihood and severity of traffic conflicts.
According to County Executive Adam Bello the plan will support the City's Vision Zero initiative in eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries. "Creating safer and more accessible transportation options is an important part of building a healthier, more connected Monroe County," said County Executive Bello in a statement. "Community input will help identify priorities and guide investments that improve safety and connectivity."
Residents share traffic thoughts
Fairport resident Lana Johnson has seen improvements to infrastructure in areas with high pedestrian traffic, but has concerns about the maintenance. "I like the new crosswalks with the lights, but sometimes the light by the library isn't working." Johnson said.
Johnson and other residents of Fairport are seeing higher volumes of traffic during the summer months, and have concerns around impatient drivers, parking and pedestrian infrastructure being in working conditions during peak times of the year. Jonhson also suggests adding a new pedestrian crosswalk near High Street.
Employees at Cuts International believe areas throughout Monroe County need more parking infrastructure and more ADA-accessible crosswalks.
Project timeline
Over the next year, the team will evaluate existing conditions, conduct an assessment of County facilities and corridors to develop a list of projects that will be integrated into future improvement and maintenance programs.
