Two teams coming off their first losses of the season. The final week for playoff position in Classes A-1 and A-2. There's plenty on the line for Section V football as the regular season winds down.
Sportswriters James Johnson, Justin Ritzel and Jeff Uveino will make predictions for three Section V football games each week. Follow along all season to see how the experts fare.
Section V football predictions, Week 7
Matchup No. 1: Rush-Henrietta vs. Hilton
Hilton 28, Rush-Henrietta 21: Both of these Monroe County Division I teams were handed their first loss of the season last week. The Hilton Cadets want to put together scoring drives with their running game, an approach Victor had success with last week against R-H. The Royal Comets have receivers and backs, including quarterback Brendan Mangione, who can turn short gains into
good gains or even touchdowns. Hilton's offense also has scored with passes downfield, something the Cadets might benefit from once or twice in this matchup.
Matchup No. 2: Eastridge vs. Brighton
Brighton 35, Eastridge 21: As one of the last undefeated teams in Section V, Brighton (6-0) is firmly entrenched in the top spot in the Class A-1 standings. Eastridge (3-3) needs a win to secure at least one home game, if not two for the Class A-2 playoffs. Justin Medina has reached the end zone three times apiece the last two weeks for Brighton, and while that specific streak comes to an end, the running back has another strong game in a victory for the Bruins.
Matchup No. 3: Victor vs. Fairport
Victor 20, Fairport 14: Two of Section V’s hottest teams match up for a game which will likely be won at the line of scrimmage. Fairport handled Canandaigua’s run-based attack two weeks ago. Can it do the same against a Victor squad riding high after its Week 6 win over Rush-Henrietta? Whichever quarterback can make more plays with his legs – Victor’s Eli Ricci or Fairport’s Marco Provenzano – could determine the winner.
