Gunfire erupting after Lucy C. Laney High School's homecoming game injured three people Saturday evening and a woman has been charged, according to authorities.
Aiyana Lane faces three charges of aggravated assault; possessing of a firearm while committing a crime; third-degree child cruelty; and carrying weapons within school safety zones, at school functions or on a bus or other transportation furnished by a school.
Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived at the high school's parking lot on Laney-Walker Boulevard about 6:05 p.m. to investigate a report of "multiple individuals" struck by gunfire, the RCSO said in a statement.
Officers learned that a physical confrontation
between Lane and another woman had been "broken up by third-parties" when "produced a firearm and fired at least one shot in the direction of the initial victim," according to the RCSO.
Three people struck by gunfire were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, the RCSO said.
In an audio statement recorded Saturday by Richmond County School System Director of Media and Public Relations Haley Cuesta, she said that only adults were involved in the incident and "that all student athletes, cheerleaders, band members and students participating in homecoming activities are safe and accounted for."
The school system's police force responded alongside sheriff's deputies. "One of our officers sustained an injury while responding to a separate altercation and is reportedly doing well," Lacuesta said.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the RCSO.
