If you haven't already received a $51 refund from Amazon, you may be getting it in the not-too-distant future. This is part of a settlement from a 2023 lawsuit. Here's what Georgians need to know:
Why is Amazon paying refunds?
The FTC alleged Amazon enrolled millions of consumers in Prime subscriptions without their knowledge or informed consent and used cancellation processes that were unnecessarily difficult to navigate. The agency also accused Amazon of using misleading interface designs to encourage enrollments.
"Today, the Trump-Vance FTC made history and secured a record-breaking, monumental win for the millions of Americans who are tired of deceptive subscriptions that feel impossible to cancel," FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson said when the settlement was announced.
Amazon
denied liability but agreed to resolve the case and simplify its Prime cancellation process.
How much money could Amazon Prime customers get?
Eligible customers may receive refunds of Prime subscription fees up to a maximum of $51. The actual amount may vary depending on individual circumstances and eligibility requirements.
The FTC says Amazon must pay $1.5 billion in refunds to affected consumers under the settlement agreement.

Who is eligible for an Amazon Prime settlement refund?
According to the FTC, consumers may qualify if they:
- Were Amazon Prime customers in the U.S.
- Signed up through one of the enrollment methods challenged in the FTC lawsuit, or attempted to cancel their membership but were unable to do so, between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025.
- Used limited Prime benefits during their membership period. Amazon will determine eligibility using its records.
- Did not already receive an automatic settlement payment.
Customers do not need to independently determine whether they enrolled through a challenged sign-up flow because Amazon will review account records as part of the claims process.
How to claim an Amazon Prime refund
Amazon began sending claim notices to eligible customers in January. Customers who received a notice could choose to receive their payment by check, PayPal or Venmo by following the instructions included with their claim form.
Those who qualified and had not already received an automatic payment had to submit a claim by July 27. The FTC warns consumers to watch for scams and notes that neither Amazon nor the FTC will ask customers to pay money to receive a refund.
When will settlement payments be sent?
Amazon issued automatic refunds to some customers during November and December 2025. Additional eligible customers who submit claims are expected to receive payments later in 2026, although a final payment date has not been announced.
