Families will soon be able to return to the playground at the Edward M. McIntyre Sr. Riverwalk, more than a year after Hurricane Helene damaged the facility beyond repair.
Augusta Recreation and Parks will host a reopening celebration at 10 a.m. Sept. 4 at the playground, located on the lower level of the levee near the Augusta Riverwalk Marina.
The event will mark the return of a popular recreational amenity and give residents and visitors a chance to explore the newly completed playground.
The previous playground was closed after sustaining irreparable damage during Hurricane Helene. The Augusta Commission approved a replacement project Oct. 21, 2025, and construction
began Feb. 23, 2026.
City officials said the reopening restores an important attraction along the riverfront for children and families.
