Here are the restaurants in Richmond and Columbia counties that posted the lowest recent food service inspection scores, along with the inspectors' comments. Scores of 70 and below are considered failing. The comments are edited for length and content.
Holiday Inn Express, 444 Broad St., Augusta, 89
- Observed cheese and milk in back reach-in cooler at 47 degrees and 48 degrees for cold holding. Place foods in an ice bath to keep all TCS food below 41 degrees.
Comfort Inn & Suites, 4071 Jimmie Dyess Pkwy., Augusta, 89
- Observed three employees missing health agreements. All kitchen employees and permit holders must sign employee health agreements, and documents must be kept on site.
- Observed no soap at the handwashing sink. To properly wash hands, the handwashing sink must always have soap at it.
- Observed sausage thawing on tabletop. Must be placed in a cooler, or have running water less than 70 degrees, or be part of the cooking process.
- Observed containers of food stored on the floor in the dry storage area. Keep containers of food at least 6 inches off the floor.
- Observed one utensil being stored under equipment. Place utensils in sink after washing.
Another Broken Egg Café, 1095 Alexander Drive, Augusta, 87
- Observed employee on grill line using cell phone for an extended amount of time and not washing hands prior to returning to his food handling duties. Wash hands and put on gloves before returning to food handling.
- Obtain employee reporting agreements, have all employees sign, and keep on file.
Walton Rehabilitation Hospital, 1355 Independence Dr., Augusta, 85
- Observed employee touch trash can and wipe nose with gloves, then proceeded to actively prepare food with those same gloves. Employee switched hands, washed hands, and put on new gloves. Retrain staff on using proper handwashing techniques at proper times.
- Observed mold-like substances on cabbage and blueberries in walk-in cooler. Monitor produce's condition.
- Observed scoop handle inside thickening powder. Store scoop with handle outside of food itself.
- Observed wet nesting of clean, stacked dishes. Allow dishes to properly air dry prior to stacking.
- Observed employees' drinks and food stored inside the reach-in cooler and on the table by the cooking equipment in the kitchen. Store employees' belongings in a designated area.
A Town Wings, 3412 Mike Padgett Highway, 84
Editor's note: This is the latest health score following a reinspection after the restaurant initially scored a 49 on Sept. 8
- Observed employee drinks stored uncovered on prep top table. Cover all employee drinks with a lid and straw to prevent possible cross-contamination.
- Observed excessive buildup on spouts of drink dispenser in dining area. Clean food contact surfaces regularly.
- Observed scoop stored in flour/breading in far back prep area. Store scoops outside of food product itself.
- Observed live ant activity under prep table next to dishwashing area. Repeat violation. Pest control serviced establishment on Sept. 10. Continue to monitor pest activity and have kitchen serviced regularly to prevent pests.
St. John's Towers, 724 Greene St., Augusta, 83
- Observed black buildup in ice chute and around drink nozzles in lobby area. Observed pink buildup and a strand of hair in the bulk ice machine in the kitchen. Observed clean dishes stored with food debris on them in lobby area and kitchen. Clean. Increase cleaning frequency. Ensure food contact surfaces are properly washed, rinsed, sanitized, and air-dried.
- Observed multiple foods (cheese, sliced tomatoes, potato salad, and pea salad) being held above 41 degrees in coolers and on countertop. Food was put on ice. Maintain all food at 41 degrees or below in all coolers.
- Observed milk held past the use-by date of Sept. 6, 2026, in the walk-in cooler. Discard. Monitor use-by dates and discard when appropriate.
- Observed apple pie filling and chocolate cans stored with a dent in the storage area. Observed four packs of strawberries with mold-like substances in the walk-in cooler. Discard. Monitor all foods' condition and put them in a separate pile.
