Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S. Services and events commemorating the day are being held across the Augusta area.
In Augusta, the tributes by the city of Augusta and Augusta University were held on Saturday. Other local ceremonies and events are being held on Friday.
Columbia County 911 stair climb
What: Columbia County Fire Rescue hosts the 25th Anniversary 911 Memorial Stair Climb.
When & Where: A remembrance ceremony begins at 8 a.m. Sept. 11 at 7015 Evans Town Center Blvd. in Evans. The stair climb will follow.
Details: Firefighters will remain on site after the ceremony to climb 55 flights of stairs to commemorate the 110 flights of stairs that were in the World Trade Center. The public can participate in the stair climb. The event
is free.
Memorial event in Aiken
What: 9/11 Memorial Walk in Aiken
When & Where: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Beverly D. Clyburn Generations Park at 700 Mack Henry Holland Drive in Aiken
Details: The event will be hosted by the Aiken County Firefighters' Association. There will be food trucks, live music, a firefighter walk, a kids area, and more. For more information, visit the Aiken County Firefighter’s Association page on Facebook.
Play based on 9-11 events
What: Performance of “Come From Away,” a musical based on the true story of the 7,000 airline passengers stranded in Newfoundland after the 9-11 attacks and the small town that welcomed them.
When & Where: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Aiken Community Theatre at 126 Newberry St. SW in Aiken.
Details: The Friday performance is sold out, but tickets were still available earlier this week for the Saturday performance. Visit aikencommunitytheatre.ludus.com/ for information and to order tickets.
Steak at the VFW
What: Steak Night dinner
When & Where: 5-8 p.m. Friday at VFW Post 6445, 330 East Milledgeville Road, Harlem
Details: Tickets are $20 each and are available at the VFW starting at 4 p.m. on Friday. Walk-ins are welcomed, but steak supplies are limited.
Midland Valley High honors first responders, veterans
What: Midland High School will honor veterans and first responders during the pre-game ceremonies and at half-time.
When & Where: The game begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the school at 227 Mustang Dr., Graniteville.
Details: One hundred hats will be given to the first responders and veterans who attend the game. The Graniteville Fire Department will bring its ladder truck and display the American Flag as players run down the hill into the stadium. All of the Midland Valley players will have U.S. flag stickers placed on the back of their helmets by local law enforcement officers and veterans.
Remembrance Ceremony at Fort Gordon
What: Fort Gordon is hosting a private Remembrance Ceremony on Friday.
When & Where: 8:30 a.m. on base at Freedom Park.
Details: This event is only open to DOW-ID card holders. It will feature cannon volleys signifying the time of each crash associated with the attack.
