Biscuit Belly had a busy first week. The new Evans breakfast and lunch restaurant opened on Tuesday, and has been packed each day, said the manager, Rafael Ramos, on Friday afternoon.
“It’s gotten busier and busier every day,” he said taking a few minutes out to speak to a reporter.
On Friday, the mid-morning the line was almost out the door, and the large dining room was crowded. He expected crowds, but said this exceeded his expectations. Fortunately, he has plenty of staff on duty and the lines were moving quickly.
Biscuit Belly is a Southern breakfast and lunch restaurant in the Evans Towne Centre at 4274 Washington Road near Publix. It’s a growing chain that expanded recently
by acquiring by another popular breakfast and brunch restaurant chain, Maple Street Biscuit Co., Ramos said.
The main menu items are Southern biscuits served in many different ways – all with clever names. Ramos is quick to say that the biscuits are scratch-made, as are most of the menu items.
The most popular menu item so far is The Rockwell, he said. It is a homemade biscuit loaded with buttermilk fried chicken breast, cheddar cheese, and sausage gravy. Diners can make it a Rockwell Supreme by adding an over-easy egg and bacon.
Other popular items are:
- Bonuts: biscuit doughnut holes with cinnamon sugar, and either bourbon cream cheese frosting or berry jam.
- Gravy Train: mini-biscuits served with samples of sausage gravy, mushroom gravy, and smoked gouda mornay.
- Loaded Breakfast Tots: Bacon and cheddar stuffed tater tots served with maple mayonnaise sauce.
- Fried green tomatoes served with house-made ranch sauce.
The names of the various sandwiches are original and quite clever, such as the one ordered during this visit: Mama's Boy. The buttermilk fried chicken breast, roasted jalapeno, pimento cheese, spicy belly pickles, and topped with a fried green tomato, all between a sliced homemade biscuit. It was delicious and surprisingly easy to eat considering it was a tall sandwich.
The Go Getta, two large biscuits smothered with plenty of homemade sausage gravy, was delicious and quite filling.
A few of the other interesting menu items were:
- Pancake Corndogs: Sausage links dunked in pancake batter and served with sweet maple mayo sauce.
- The Hot Brown: Turkey, smoked gouda mornay, bacon, roasted tomato served on an open-faced biscuit
- The Love Shack: Brie, honey, berry jam, fresh berries, and pralines on an open-faced biscuit.
- Belly Buster: Buttermilk fried chicken breast, sausage, bacon, brisket, cheddar cheese, mushroom gravy, and an over-easy egg on an open-faced biscuit.
