The Burke County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday released the identities of four people killed in a weekend shooting they said was perpetrated by Adolphus Christopher Morris, who was later killed in a shootout with deputies.
The victims, all of Sardis, were identified as Walter Bunch, 59; Rebecca Oglesby, 51; Betty Fort, 53; and Jessica Carroll, 31. Another man, Andrew Putnam, was injured and remains in stable condition, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities previously said deputies found a man and a woman dead at a Twin Lakes Road home on Aug. 9, then found two women dead during a welfare check at a residence on Tom Bargeron Road later that night. The deaths had initially
been investigated as two potentially connected double homicides, while authorities withheld the victims’ identities pending notification of their families.
Morris, 44, was later killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement in Sardis after deputies sought to contact him in connection with the killings, the sheriff’s office previously said. Authorities said Morris allegedly fled in a red Ford Escape with his grandmother, whose vehicle was stopped after tire-deflation devices were deployed. Morris then allegedly exited the vehicle and fired at deputies, who returned fire. His grandmother was not injured.
The agency did not immediately provide a motive or further details about the relationships among Morris and the victims in Thursday’s update.
