It's Labor Day,and while plenty of Georgiansare enjoying a day off, some of the servicesyou may need today are closed.
Monday, Sept. 7, is a state and federal holiday. Georgia lists Labor Day among the 2026 state holidays when the state Capitol and state agencies are closed.
If you need to run errands, send mail or take care of government business, here’s what to know before heading out.
What’s closed today?
Post offices: U.S. Postal Service locations are closed today, and regular mail delivery is suspended. Regular service will resume Tuesday, Sept. 8. Some self-service options may still be available at select locations.
Georgia state offices: State government offices are closed for Labor Day. That includes the Georgia State Capitol and state agencies.
Banks: Bank branches
are generally closed for the federal holiday. Customers can still use many ATMs and online banking services, although specific services can vary by bank.
Schools: Many Georgia schools are off for Labor Day. For example, the University of Georgia has no classes and its offices are closed today. Individual school districts and private schools can have their own calendars, so families should check their local schedules.
UPS and FedEx: Regular delivery operations are affected by the holiday, although some specialized services and individual store locations may operate on different schedules.
Trash and recycling: There is no single statewide Labor Day schedule for trash collection. Pickup changes depend on the local government or private waste company serving your area, so residents should check their provider before putting out bins.
What about everything else?
Labor Day does not mean Georgia shuts down for the day.
Many privately owned businesses, restaurants, grocery stores and retailers can remain open, although holiday hours may vary by location.
What grocery stores are closed today?
According to Reader's Digest, Costco is not open. Most all other chain stores are remaining open.
