An
Aiken man who was pulled from the Savannah River after going underwater while swimming has died, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
Coroner Darryl Ables said Justin Swearingen, 40, of Aiken, was reported swimming in the Savannah River on Aug. 15 when he went beneath the surface. Bystanders pulled him to shore, and he was transported to WellStar MCG Health, where he was pronounced dead at 10:03 p.m. Aug. 17.
The Coroner’s Office began investigating the death on Aug. 18. Swearingen’s death has been ruled accidental due to drowning. Toxicology results are pending.
