What is the story about?

Augusta Regional Airport has been approved for an $800,000 federal grant to add a new nonstop flight to Chicago.

The Midwest metropolis is the fourth-largest travel market for Augusta passengers, according to the grant.

The U.S. Department of Transportation funding is intended to cover revenue guarantees and marketing to charter the direct flights to Chicago O'Hare International Airport.

Under revenue guarantees, if the new route isn't immediately profitable, the grant can be used to help recoup losses. The grant also would fund marketing targeted at air passengers who use other airports to visit Chicago.

According to the government order awarding the funds, the airport must first

sign a grant agreement with the DOT. After spending approved money on the project, the grant will reimburse those costs.

Augusta Regional offers several nonstop flights to cities including Atlanta, New York, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, N.C., Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami, Philadelphia, Detroit and Minneapolis.
