More than $3 million in federal grants have been approved to fund improvements at Augusta Regional Airport.
The Augusta Commission last week formally accepted a pair of grants under the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program.
The $2.207 million grant is funding construction of the Northwest Development Roadway and Utilities Extension, which will connect Cargo Road directly to Doug Barnard Parkway.
Cargo Road, just a few hundred feet long, connects a vehicle rental facility with Aviation Way, the airport's main road. The extended utility lines would support future commercial growth at the airport.
The $1,040,576 grant is intended to help fund
the purchase of heavy-duty aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment capable of controlling high-volume, rapid-release fire suppression systems.
The airport and Augusta's city government received the grants on July 13 and 15. Mayor Garnett Johnson formally executed the grants on July 16.
