Two Augusta history leaders have been selected to take part in Our American Story, a nationwide oral history initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Corey Rogers, executive director of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History, and Ransom Schwerzler, director of Meadow Garden, recently traveled to Athens to record interviews for the project. The conversations focused on lived experiences, civic engagement and personal legacy. Their interviews will be added to the Our American Story archive, with selected recordings preserved at the Library of Congress.
Destination Augusta President and CEO Bennish Brown said the pair are strong representatives
of the community and that their participation offers an opportunity to highlight Augusta’s role in the nation’s history as the country marks its 250th anniversary.
Rogers has led the Lucy Craft Laney Museum since 2023, helping share the legacy of educator and social reformer Lucy Craft Laney and the history of Augusta’s Black community. Schwerzler oversees Meadow Garden, the historic home of Declaration of Independence signer George Walton, and has led preservation and restoration efforts at the site.
Both said the project is an opportunity to share Augusta’s history with a national audience.
The two join participants from across the country contributing to a national record documenting how local communities have influenced American civic life, innovation and culture over the past 250 years.
