Since Greenbrier football head coach Sean Tiernan took the reins in 2024, the Wolfpack have been in a rebuilding phase. The squad has combined for six wins over the last two years, but early returns on the 2026 season says there might be light at the end of the tunnel.
After a Week 1 loss to Burke County, Tiernan’s squad made the short trip over to Evans High and flipped the script with a 42-35 win on Friday, Aug. 28. It's the Wolfpack's first win over the Knights in 15 years, potentially signaling a different era for Greenbrier football.
“It’s great, our kids played their butts off. But they’ve been doing that for the last three years. We’ve just kind of fell short on some games,” Tiernan said. “Our kids found a way to finish this game, and that was
the big thing.”
During the opening week, Greenbrier showed promise in the first half against Burke County. But in the second half they weren’t able to execute to win the game. Fast forward to this week, and it’s clear that the Wolfpack learned from their mistakes.
Greenbrier never trailed in this one. Even when Evans threatened to take the lead, tying the game twice in the fourth quarter, Tiernan’s squad looked composed. Key to that composure was the presence of senior Brennan Bjorkman. He finished the game with a career-high five rushing touchdowns along with helping get big stops down the stretch in the secondary.
The ability to close out games is something the Wolfpack has struggled with in recent years. A win like this is a major confidence booster, particularly against a foe that’s had their number for a decade and a half.
There’s still a long way to go. But if the Wolfpack’s recent play is any indication, they might just be able to break another unfortunate streak: a playoff drought going back to the 2020 campaign.
