It's roster cut day for the NFL, and that means it's time for the Tennessee Titansto trim the team down to 53 active players, down from the 91 players they've carried throughout training camp.
After three preseason games and joint practices against the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears, the Titans have narrowed in on who their projected starters are, but still have plenty of uncertainty at the bottom of the roster. Several special teams spots are up for grabs, leaving plenty of jobs available for running backs, receivers, tight ends, linebackers and defensive backs. The Titans also have room for movement at offensive line and defensive end, two spots where in-camp competitions resolved early but still leave questions about
who'll fill out the team.
Per league rules, NFL teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by 5 p.m. CT on Aug. 30. One day later, teams can begin building a practice squad of up to 17 players, provided one of those players has an international exemption. Players cut on Aug. 30 will be subject to waive claim and can be signed by any NFL team starting at noon CT on Aug. 31. Any player claimed off waives must be signed to a team's active roster for at least four weeks, or else they'll have to be released or placed on injured reserve.
Counting their international exemption player, the Titans are carrying 91 players. Assuming the Titans don't claim any players off waivers, if they keep internal players to fill out the active roster and practice squad, they'll still have to part ways with 21 participants from the preseason.
One of the most notable players to watch on cut day and in the waiver process will be former Titans starting quarterback Will Levis. A second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Levis took over as the Titans' starting quarterback midway through his rookie season and was the primary starter in 2024 before being benched and, ultimately, replaced by Cam Ward. Levis missed the entire 2025 season rehabbing from shoulder surgery and primarily served as the Titans' No. 3 passer this preseason.
Other players worth watching as the roster gets trimmed include receivers K.J. Osborn, Bryce Oliver and Xavier Restrepo, running backs Julius Chestnut, Kalel Mullings and Michael Carter, offensive linemen Austin Deculus, Cordell Volson and Jackson Slater and safeties Erick Hallett, Jerrick Reed II and Kendell Brooks.
