The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a Columbia man sustained multiple gunshot wounds in a shootout with a police officer Sept. 12.
In a news release, Columbia Police Chief Jeremy Haywood said officers with the Columbia Police Department arrived at Skyview Drive around 9:30 a.m. Sept. 12 after receiving a call for service reporting that the resident, 48-year-old Matthew Kirk, was outside firing handgun rounds into the ground.
When officers arrived, the release said, Kirk fired multiple rounds toward them. An officer returned fire, and Kirk went inside the residence. The release did not name the officer.
After that, Columbia Police Department SWAT officers and crisis negotiators established contact with Kirk by phone, and they
learned he had multiple gunshot wounds as a result of the exchange with the officer. The officer wasn’t injured during the shootout.
An emergency team entered the residence and took Kirk into custody. He was treated at the scene and then flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to undergo surgery.
The release noted District Attorney Brent Cooper requested that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigtation conduct an independent investigation. The officer involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
