Starting Sunday, Aug. 9, through the end of 2026, the Tennessee Department of Transportation will conduct nightly closures on Interstate 840 and Interstate 65 in Williamson County. The regular shutdowns make way for construction crews to begin much-needed maintenance and resurfacing work on the roads.
The work is part of a comprehensive three-year, statewide paving program to improve Tennessee's roads. Funding comes from $400 million in one-time, nonrecurring funds that Tennessee legislators designated for TDOT in the fiscal year 2027 budget.
Unfortunately, the timeline for construction to begin lined up with the start of the Williamson County Fair, which opened on Aug. 7 and will run through Aug. 15.
"Drivers are asked to use caution in these
areas, especially over the next two weeks, due to the Williamson County Fair," TDOT said in a statement. "To help ensure safe and efficient travel during the Williamson County Fair, TDOT will have a dedicated HELP Truck patrolling the corridor between Interstate 840 and Concord Road throughout the event."
Officials also plan to place traffic cones and message boards in the area to alert drivers of the situation and help encourage safe driving while construction is ongoing.
What's closing and when?
Every evening from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., lane closures will begin on I-840 from near State Route 6 (US-31) to east of Arno Road. Volunteer Paving crews there will complete a new resurfacing project that is projected to be done by the end of December.
At the same time, Vulcan Construction workers will close lanes on I-65 from near I-840 to Liberty Pike to complete another resurfacing project, also set to be finished by the start of 2027.
On Aug. 12, crews will shut down the I-65 northbound on-ramp from Exit 67 at McEwen Drive for milling and paving operations from 8 p.m. to 5 p.m., and the following day at the same time, the I-65 northbound on-ramp from Exit 69 at Moores Lane will be closed for a similar project.
Signs for detours will be in place for each ramp closure.
