The Lebanon Special School District and Wilson County Schools both began the 2026-27 school year Aug. 3, but families with children in both neighboring districts will need to keep track of different calendars.
Wilson County Schools canceled classes Aug. 6 because several schools served as Election Day voting centers, while Lebanon Special School District students remained in class.
There will be more differences as well.
Here's a look at both 2026-27 calendars:
Why are they different?
The Lebanon Special School District has five elementary schools with approximately 4,850 students.
After eighth grade, Lebanon Special District School students are generally zoned to a Wilson County high school. Wilson County Schools has more than 20,000 students. So it's not unusual for families
to have students in both districts.
The two districts do match calendars as close as possible, officials from both districts said.
Buildings being used for election sites are one reason for some calendar differences.
Another is Wilson County needs additional test dates and preparation for high schools in both the fall and spring semesters, Wilson County Schools Supervisor of Human Resources Monty Wilson said.
Both districts also have to schedule professional development training days for faculties that may not line up, Lebanon Special School District Communications Director Marilee Tice said.
