An 84-year-old driver who fatally ran over a pedestrian on Broadway has been criminally charged, according to a news release from the Metro Nashville Police Department.
The driver, Thomas Cahill of Bowling Green, Kentucky, also injured three others when he ran a red light at the intersection of Broadway and Fourth Avenue on Aug. 1. The crash has since led to renewed conversations and developments in city council surrounding pedestrian safety in the area.
Police are charging Cahill with one count of failure to yield resulting in death and three counts of failure to yield resulting in serious injury, and his booking date is set for Oct. 1. The charges are misdemeanors. The investigation has not determined why Cahill suddenly accelerated at the intersection,
as Cahill later told officers he had no recollection of what happened, according to the release.
The deceased pedestrian, 58-year-old Timothy Wedlock, was visiting from Australia when he was killed. Two other pedestrians remain hospitalized. Cahill was also hospitalized for a few days.
