Who had the best TSSAA football performances from the Nashville area in Week 1?
Each week, we’ll rank the top five Nashville area individual performances and team wins based on statistics, quality of opponents and how wins factor into the Tennessee high school football playoffs.
Top TSSAA football Week 1 individual performances ranked
1. Kale Scott, Mt. Pleasant: Scott completed 25-of-32 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for a score in a 42-41 overtime win over Battle Creek.
2. Jermaine Cobbins, Springfield: Cobbins made three catches for 142 yards and a touchdown in a 35-3 win over Rossview.
3. Issac Prince, East Robertson: Prince had 33 carries for 241 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-21 win over Liberty Creek.
4. EJ Gibson, Ensworth: Gibson had 213 rushing yards on 31 carries in a 24-8 win over Whitehaven.
5. Chase Bell, Blackman: Bell completed 14-of-22 for 194 yards while adding a 10-yard touchdown run in a 29-10 win over Clarksville.
Top TSSAA football Week 1 team performances ranked
1. Upperman: The Bees lost a lot of production when quarterback Bronzden Chaffin graduated. That’s why their 21-20 win over Knoxville Webb stands out.
2. Montgomery Bell Academy: The Big Red’s 34-20 win over Pearl-Cohn was impressive. Pearl-Cohn’s a favorite to reach the Class 4A state final; its offense is loaded but only managed six points.
3. Ravenwood: The Raptors’ 29-14 over Madison Ridgeland (Mississippi) was important because it showed Ravenwood managed all the turnover from last season, with 42 seniors graduating.
4. Gordonsville: The Tigers could be a Class 2A sleeper. They picked up a 17-13 win over Coalfield, a potential Class 1A contender.
5. Father Ryan: The Irish didn’t have the most difficult Week 1 game, but their 40-0 win over Overton still mattered. That’s nearly twice as many points as Father Ryan scored in a game all last season in former Tennessee Titan QB Zach Mettenberger’s first year as coach.
