The Tennessee Titans are postponing running back Chris Johnson's induction into the franchise Ring of Honor that was previously scheduled for Sept. 13 due to "unforeseen circumstances."
"Chris Johnson and his family are no longer able to travel to Nashville for this Sunday's game," the statement continues. "Knowing how much he and his family desire to be in person at Nissan Stadium for his induction into the Titans Ring of Honor, we will postpone the official induction ceremony and look forward to celebrating the moment with them at a future date.
"Sunday's halftime ceremony will remain dedicated to celebrating Chris' incredible on-field achievements and legacy with our team. Our thoughts, along with those of Titans fans everywhere, continue to be
with Chris and his wife, Brittany."
Johnson went public with his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis diagnosis in the summer, a diagnosis he's been battling for a year. One of the most productive and best regarded ball-carriers in franchise history, Johnson was set to be inducted into the Ring of Honor during halftime of the team's opener against the New York Jets, the first game to be played at Nissan Stadium since Johnson came forward with his diagnosis.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated in an article published earlier this week, Johnson discussed how he's dealing with the illness and confronted the possibility that his playing career could've been the reason why he contracted ALS, which at this point is considered incurable.
The Titans have no further statement on the matter.
