Dolly Parton, the beloved East Tennessee singer-songwriter who sent millions of books to children across Tennessee and around the world, left behind a legacy of philanthropy when she died Aug. 25 in Nashville.
Along with that legacy, the "9 to 5" singer leaves behind nieces, nephews andmillions of fans, but no children of her own.
Parton, who wasmarried to Carl Dean for nearly 60 years before his death in 2025, never had children. She had said that her demanding career and the freedom afforded by being child-free allowed her to focus on her music, business ventures and charitable endeavors.
“Since I had no kids, and my husband was pretty independent, I had freedom,” she said in a 2020 episode of Apple TV+’s The Oprah Conversation. “So I think a big
part of my whole success is the fact that I was free to work.”
In a statement to The Tennessean, Parton's representatives said the singer died "after bravely facing a brief battle with cancer." The statement goes on to say Parton died surrounded by loved ones at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville.

Did Dolly Parton have children?
Parton never had children of her own.
“I didn’t have children because I believed that God didn’t mean for me to have kids so everybody’s kids could be mine, so I could do things like Imagination Library, because if I hadn’t had the freedom to work, I wouldn’t have done all the things I’ve done,” Parton told Winfrey.
“I wouldn’t be in a position to do all of the things I’m doing now.”
Parton founded the Imagination Libraryin 1995 in her native Sevier County. Created in honor of her father, who was unable to read, the initiative mails free books to children from birth through age 5 and has distributed more than 332 million books worldwide.
In a2025 interview with People, Parton said she was ultimately grateful she never had to wrestle with the guilt of leaving children behind while working or touring.
“You know, I have just been going so fast my whole life. And I just start thinking, ‘How in the world did I even have a life? How did I even get it done?’ I really realized when I was putting this book [Star of the Show: My Life on Stage] together just how much I had sacrificed in my life,” she said.
“I never had children, so at least I didn’t have a guilty feeling. I’m thankful that I got to see my dreams come true.”
Dolly Parton was unable to have children
In a2003 interview with Rolling Stone, Parton revealed she was unable to have children, a reality she eventually came to accept.
"I just think, you know, it ain’t meant for some people to have kids,” she told Rolling Stone. “I don’t regret it. My husband don’t regret it. He’s like my only child, I’m like his only child. And the older we get, the gladder we are that we don’t have them now, because we take care of a lot of other people’s kids."
Instead, she often said she viewed other people's children as her own.
"We buy new cars for all the nieces and nephews that graduate, we send any to college that want to go."
What was Dolly Parton cause of death?
Parton died after a brief battle with an undisclosed type of cancer. She had been hospitalized at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center since Aug. 21.
Parton had faced a series of health concerns in recent months, which prevented her from attending an announcement about Dollywood's newest ride in September and later led to the delay of her planned Las Vegas residency until 2026, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported.
