Just because the Tennessee Titans have a 53-man roster doesn't mean the depth chart is final.
The Titans and the rest of the NFL will spend today, Aug. 31, assembling their practice squads and putting some additional finishing touches on their active rosters via waiver claims and the free agent market. The Titans sit at No. 4 in the waiver claim order to start the season, meaning they'll have fourth dibs on any non-veteran free agents who were released by their teams on cut day, Aug. 30. Anyone they claim will have to be signed to the active roster.
This comes just hours after the Titans trimmed their roster from the 91 participants in training camp to the 53 active players allowed for the start of the regular season. The deadline to submit waiver
claims is noon CT, and shortly thereafter announcements should be made about which teams are granted which players.
Then comes the sprint to build a practice squad of 16 players, or up to 17 if one is an international pathways player. Teams can begin assembling their practice squads immediately after waivers are granted, though the process is usually an ongoing one throughout the day. Teams generally build practice squads primarily from players who've been in training camp with them throughout the offseason, but teams are allowed to sign any free agent to a practice squad contract.
