With the Middle Tennessee region continuing to grow, first responders and public safety agencies are facing increasing demands.
The Franklin Police Department recently raised starting salaries for both new recruits and experienced officers, positioning itself among the highest-paying law enforcement agencies in Middle Tennessee.
Beginning immediately, entry-level officers will start at $68,000, while certified lateral officers can earn $73,000 to $77,000, depending on verified law enforcement experience.

New Franklin police pay edges out neighboring Murfreesboro, where the starting salary is $67,921. Franklin's starting pay also tops Nashville ($66,204), Smyrna ($66,304), Mt. Juliet ($61,960) and Clarksville ($57,712).
Murfreesboro Police Department added 30 new positions and hired 30 officers in the last fiscal year, and Lieutenant Jason Higgins said having competitive pay is key to growth.
"I think it absolutely has an impact just because it's hard for people to leave any job making a certain amount of money and then find another job going in the door making that much,” said Higgins, who is head of recruitment.
In addition to salaries, public safety agencies offer benefits such as four-day work weeks, tuition reimbursement, a pension among other compensation.
Police departments in Franklin, Murfreesboro, Nashville and Smyrna are among the regional agencies currently hiring.
Higgins said Murfreesboro often receives applicants who are moving from other parts of the country.
”We get people who are relocating to Tennessee from literally all over the country,” Higgins added. “ I think Tennessee is a draw to many because of the way of life here. Many move because they can come and make a little bit more while doing the same job.”
Recently, Franklin Police Department has welcomed several new officers and roles including a victims service coordinator.
