Bearden vs Houston. A possible Class AAA state ... semifinal?
The TSSAA soccer seeding method using the MaxPreps RPI system began last year to help limit the tournament favorites from meeting in the semifinals. But a one-loss Franklin faced a two-loss Bearden in last year's semifinals.
Well, it's happening again.
Houston and Bearden could meet in this year's semifinal. The two programs have a combined 16 state championships and since 2021, one or the other has won the AAA title. The two teams have squared off in the championship game four of the past five seasons.
Merrol Hyde, Westview could be collision course
Is there a Class A state championship rematch brewing? That could be the case when the title game is played at 10 a.m. on Oct. 30. The two teams have combined for 28 wins this season and are on opposite ends of the bracket. Westview captured a 2-0 championship win last year. Merrol Hyde has been to the past six state championship games, having won titles in 2021, 2022 and 2024. It could have a potential difficult matchup against Cascade if both meet in Oct. 28's semifinal as Cascade comes into the tournament with a 16-1-1 record.
Is Greeneville due in Class AA?
For a five-year period from 2015-2020, Greeneville was virtually unstoppable in the classification. The Greene Devils won state championships in 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2020. They finished state runner-up in 2017. Their last championship appearance was only three years ago, but it could make another run this season and possibly face Liberty Creek who is the defending AA state champs.
Can anyone end Baylor's run?
DII-AA has been dominated the past three years by the Red Raiders who have won state titles in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Last year it was Christ Presbyterian Academy who lost in the semifinal round to Baylor. This year, Harpeth Hall will get its chance. If Baylor wins and CPA beats Knoxville Webb, a potential state tournament rematch would be intriguing between the Red Raiders and Lady Lions.
