A Nashville nonprofit leader may be thinking "this is why we can't have nice things" after she unknowingly missed Taylor Swift's wedding after her husband deleted the invitation, convinced it was a phishing scam.
Jennifer Escue, CEO of the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, shared the story in a social media video, explaining that her husband, Nashville bassist Tim Marks, received a text inviting him to Swift and Travis Kelce's July 3 wedding but immediately assumed it was fraudulent.
Marks, who is credited as a bassist on Swift's self-titled debut album, "Fearless" and "Speak Now," deleted the message without mentioning it to his wife.
"When he got a text saying that he was invited to the wedding, he immediately thought scam,"
she said. "Because he cares so much about cybersecurity and is so convinced that he was right about it being a scam, he just ignored it, deleted it and never said a word about it."
By the time the couple realized the invitation was legitimate, the wedding was over.
"Friends, it was not a scam," Escue said. "It was real, and by the time we put it together, the wedding was already over."
Escue isn't the only guest who initially questioned the invitation's authenticity.
American Century Investments CEO Jonathan Thomas previously revealed he also believed text messages from the couple were spam, repeatedly deleting them before eventually blocking the number. Kelce later called Thomas personally to ask why he hadn't responded to the invitation.
The elaborate process helped keep the July 3 ceremony private despite a guest list of roughly 1,000 people.
While Escue joked she once thought she could "die with no regrets," she said the missed invitation has become her one regret.
"The only bright side I can see is that I will never again sit in an endless Zoom meeting thinking about that icebreaker that says, 'What's the fun fact about you?' Because this will be my fun fact about me for the rest of my life."
Escue shared the story on the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence's social media channels, using the lighthearted anecdote to draw attention to the organization's work supporting survivors and preventing domestic and sexual violence.
