The dog days of summer may be officially over, but Nashville is in for an extended stretch of sweltering temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service, dangerous heat is expected through the weekend, with heat index values reaching the triple digits west of the Cumberland Plateau. Afternoon heat index values between 100 and 110 degrees are expected Aug. 14.
A heat advisory is in effect for portions of Middle Tennessee through 7 p.m. Aug. 16.
There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms Aug. 14, mainly east of Interstate 65. Any stronger storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall, wrote the weather service in its morning discussion.

Hot temperatures combined with high humidity could cause heat-related
illnesses, forecasters warned. Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, avoid prolonged time in the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.

When will Nashville see relief from heat?
Nashville should get a brief break from the heat early next week, according to the weather service.
A weak front is expected to move into the area during the afternoon hours of Aug. 17, bringing a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms and lowering temperatures closer to normal on Aug. 18.
However, the cooldown is expected to be "lackluster and temporary." Forecasters say temperatures will begin climbing again by the middle of next week, so any relief from the heat likely won't last long.
