Clark Lea shut down rumors that he could make a starting quarterback shift against Delaware, stating Sept. 10 that Blaze Berlowitz would get the start against Delaware.
Vanderbilt football (1-0) still plans to play Jared Curtis in the game and hopes to get him more early action in the contest Sept. 12 (3:15 p.m. CT, SEC Network) at FirstBank Stadium against the Blue Hens (1-0).
"Blaze will start," Lea said. "We didn't change anything that way. He's earned the right to take the first snaps. We're going to play both. I think Jared's had a really good week, they both have. ... There was never another direction that we were headed. It's, hey, we're staying the course. We'd like to see Jared maybe get a little more early on, but looking forward to seeing
both guys compete."
In a 28-9 win against Austin Peay, Lea said he felt that the playcalling strayed too far from the game plan and that the playcalling needed to be more uniform regardless of which quarterback was in the game.
"Focus first on what's going to be best against Delaware, and then the quarterback needs to go out there and execute it," Lea said. "We can, within that sheet, say, hey, these plays this guy feels really comfortable with, and some of those plays are going to be the same. But let's not try to reinvent the wheel. Let's stay on the sheet, and then also it's not going to be perfect. So let's lean on the defense, let's lean on special teams, let's be OK punting the ball some too, and find that rhythm to where we can score the points we need to win the game."
