A baby died at an alleged illegal day care in Smyrna over the weekend, state and local spokespeople confirmed Sept. 2.
The Smyrna Police Department responded to a medical call Aug. 29 at 606 Lake Farm Road, town spokesperson Heather Kent told The Daily News Journal.
"The call involved the death of an infant." Kent said. "Smyrna Police and state agencies, including the Department of Child Services, are investigating the circumstances of the death and operations that were being conducted at this residence. This investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time."
The Tennessee Department of Human Services will assist law enforcement and other authorities in their investigation of the case as needed, confirmed spokesperson Danielle
Cotton.
"We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the child’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," Cotton told the DNJ.
"At this time, the illegal childcare operator is under a joint investigation with the Tennessee Department of Children Services (TDCS) and law enforcement. For all child endangerment cases, these are typically led by TDCS, and they may be able to provide more information. TDHS will assist law enforcement and other authorities in their investigation as needed."
Kent confirmed that her town's police department also is involved in the fatality case.
No details were provided about how the child died. An identity has not been released at this time.
