One of boxing's glamour divisions could see a new champion crowned in Las Vegas on Aug. 22, as former two-weight world champion Teofimo Lopez challenges WBA welterweight titlist Rolando "Rolly" Romero.
Lopez will make his divisional debut, moving up from junior welterweight where he reigned as lineal and WBO champion for over two years. His run atop the division came to an end in January, as he suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Shakur Stevenson, soon after announcing his plans to campaign in a new weight class.
Romero, also a two-division world champion, will defend the WBA belt for the first time since being elevated to full champion by the sanctioning body last August. He positioned himself for the title by scoring an upset victory over
Ryan Garcia in May 2025, which earned him the WBA's "Regular" title.
“I’m ready for this fight. It’s put up or shut up at this point," Lopez said on Aug. 19. "They want to see if I still have it. I’m ready to do whatever it takes.
“This is my road to undisputed at welterweight. It starts August 22. I see myself with my hand raised. Nothing but victory.”

Romero has held the WBA welterweight title since August 2025, when he was elevated from "Regular" champion following Jaron Ennis's departure from the division. He previously claimed the WBA 140-pound title with a controversial win over Ishmael Barroso in 2023, before losing it the next fight in a defeat to Isaac Cruz.
Having been out of the ring over a year, he is unranked at welterweight by ESPN and The Ring.
