More than 16,000 high school seniors nationwide are in the running for a National Merit Scholarship, including nearly 200 from Middle Tennessee.
The organization named semifinalists for scholarships in a Sept. 9 news release. Finalists will be named in February, and winners be announced in several waves from April to July. While the National Merit Scholarship organization offers $2,500 to winners, some may receive more through corporate- or college-sponsored scholarships. While more than a million high school juniors entered the program by taking a qualifying test in 2025, only about 1% advanced to the semifinal round. The organization will ultimately award 6,700 scholarships total next year.
The organization works to "recognize and honor the
academically talented students of the United States" and encourage sponsors to support the scholarships, according to its website.
