Vanderbilt football is under a month from its season opener and will face a new nine-game SEC schedule in 2026.
The Commodores were picked to finish 13th in the SEC and received votes in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Most prognosticators see Vanderbilt as a team that's on the bubble of becoming bowl eligible, but the Commodores have set their sights higher, looking to qualify for the College Football Playoff and win a national championship.
Whichever direction the season takes, some games will be absolutely vital for Vanderbilt, while others are not.
Ahead of the season opener against Austin Peay Sept. 5 (6 p.m. CT, SEC Network+), here is every game on the schedule ranked from most to least important:
Tier 1: Swing games
These are games that could go either way in terms
of result, making them the most important.
1. Tennessee
What other game could take the top spot? Tennessee is the last game of the season, so anything that's at stake for Vanderbilt − bowl eligibility, CFP chances, ruining the Vols' chances at either of those things − will be decided in that game. That's without taking into account the rivalry, where the stakes are always high for each side to gain bragging rights.
2. Auburn
Auburn has been ranked either just above or just below Vanderbilt in most polls, making it a true swing game − especially because it's on the road. With this game being early in the season, it will likely also be a good indication of how the rest of the Commodores' season is going to go.
3. Florida
Held late in the season, if Vanderbilt is on the bubble for a bowl, this game will be one of its last chances to get there. Similarly to Auburn, Florida is ranked just above the Commodores, so it's a game with a significant probability of either winning or losing.
Tier 2: Games Vanderbilt has a good chance to win
Vanderbilt should be favored in these games, but they aren't a sure thing. It will be important for the Commodores to win most games in this tier to get bowl eligible.
4. Kentucky
Kentucky looks like it will be improved under a new coaching staff, and this game is in Lexington, raising the difficulty level a bit.
5. Arkansas
Arkansas has been slightly better than Mississippi State over the past three years, but not by much. This game is more important to win than the one against the Bulldogs since it will be at home.
6. Mississippi State
This is at least a road game, but Mississippi State has won two SEC games since 2023. There's more downside risk than upside risk to this game; if Vanderbilt wins, it won't be seen as a bolster to the resume, but if Vanderbilt loses it will be an anchor.
7. NC State
NC State is another home game that Vanderbilt should win. If the Commodores lose, it may be a sign that they're taking a step back − but with how early in the season it is, and with it not being an SEC game, there will be time to recover if that happens.
Tier 3: Games where Vanderbilt will be a long shot
Vanderbilt won't be favored to win these games, and losing them shouldn't affect bowl eligibility if it takes care of business elsewhere. On the flip side, if the Commodores do find themselves in CFP contention, they may need to win two of these games, rather than just one, reducing each individual game's importance.
8. Georgia
This game is important for the bragging rights and proof of concept more than anything. Freshman QB Jared Curtis was a former Georgia commitment. Curtis travels to Athens to see what could have been. Vanderbilt doesn't need a win, but it could really serve to keep the score close.
9. Alabama
Vanderbilt beat Alabama once in 2024, so why not again? This game will surely generate outsized interest from fans and outsiders alike because of what happened the last time the Crimson Tide visited FirstBank Stadium.
10. Ole Miss
Ole Miss is similar to the other two, but without as many "bragging rights" stakes as what come with the Alabama and Georgia games.
Tier 4: Only important if Vanderbilt loses
Vanderbilt should be heavily favored in these games. The only way they will become important is if Vanderbilt manages to lose one of them − and if that happens, the remaining games will become that much more important.
11. Delaware
Delaware is in its second year of FBS and managed a win in the 68 Ventures Bowl, but the Blue Hens played only one Power Four opponent and got blown out.
12. Austin Peay
The season opener could help generate interest for Vanderbilt football in 2026, but it's unlikely to have many stakes beyond that.
