Taylor Swift is back on country radio, but fans hoping for a surprise announcement will have to keep waiting.
Spoiler alert: There was no debut rerecord news, no "reputation (Taylor's Version)" news and no launch of a potential 13th era.
Instead, Swift's country radio appearances Sept. 5 featured prerecorded audio about songwriting, "Toy Story 5" and lessons she's learned after years in the recording studio. Rather than live back-and-forth interviews, hosts introduced questions and played responses supplied by Swift.
The same clips aired on Nashville's WSM Radio during "Y'all Access with Kelly Sutton" and the nationally syndicated "American Country Countdown with Ryan Fox."

'What would Randy do?'
Swift spent the longest clip explaining how she and producer Jack Antonoff approached writing "I Knew It, I Knew You" for the "Toy Story 5" soundtrack.
"When I realized that we were gonna have the opportunity to write a song for 'Toy Story,' it really hit me the weight of this, like how lucky we were to get to sort of take up what Randy Newman has created and continue that legacy," Swift said.
Rather than reinventing the sound Newman established across the Pixar franchise, Swift said, she and Antonoff wanted their contribution to feel as though it belonged alongside his work.
"I just thought we're gonna take these beautiful, you know, tapestries of musical art he's created, brushstroke by brushstroke, and we're gonna try to create something that would go in that collection," she said. "That you could hopefully, like, hang next to those paintings on the wall if we were talking about paintings."
Swift said she and Antonoff are both "huge" Newman fans but noted that his chord progressions and musical sensibilities differ from her own.
"And so we try to channel what, you know, what would Randy do?" Swift said. "That took us to a very different place musically."
The harmonica on "I Knew It, I Knew You" was an intentional nod to Jessie, the cowgirl doll whose perspective inspired the song.
"I really thought that we needed to, in this ode to Jessie, kind of, you know, pay homage to where she comes from, which is she's this cowgirl doll, and she comes from this Western landscape," Swift said.
Detail with a purpose
Swift also reflected on a hallmark of her songwriting: specificity.
"It's kind of been brought to my attention that I, and I agree with this, that I love to use detail in my lyricism," Swift said. "And that's true. I am very proud of that."
But she said she checks whether those details actually advance the story, reveal something about the narrator or describe the person who inspired the song.
"Detailed, just for the sake of saying descriptive words, is not really my thing," Swift said. "Like, I love detail if it informs the actual human emotion that we're singing about."
Then she offered the thought as potential advice for other songwriters.
"So I think that might be a lesson if somebody cared to take a lesson from what I'm doing," she said.
Swift has one more country radio program scheduled this weekend: the iHeartCountry House Party with Wayne D and Tay. It is not yet clear whether the broadcast will include different prerecorded material or the same clips heard on WSM Radio and "American Country Countdown."
