It's been over a year since Rolly Romero upset Ryan Garcia in a career-best win which ultimately landed him the WBA welterweight title.
Now in his first defense he's turned to former two-division world champion Teofimo Lopez, who'll make his welterweight debut as he challenges Romero at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Aug. 22.
The same night Romero shocked Garcia, Lopez successfully defended his WBO junior welterweight belt against Arnold Barboza, furthering his claim for divisional supremacy at 140 pounds. But much has changed for Lopez since. He returned to the ring in January, suffering a one-sided unanimous decision defeat in a title defense against Shakur Stevenson, soon after announcing his plans to move up in weight.
"I’m fighting a big puncher
at 147 and going up to that weight for the first time. We’re taking a risk, because it’s no risk, no reward," Lopez said after a media workout. "I’m just focusing on my objectives so I can come out victorious."
