This might look like a boring NFL game on paper.
Neither the Tennessee Titans (0-4) nor Houston Texans (0-4) own a victory in 2026 ahead of their AFC South opener on Oct. 11 (noon CT, CBS) at Nissan Stadium.
But try to see it this way: These teams are desperate right now. The games don’t get any more winnable down the stretch, so better win this one.
It will probably be a dogfight.
Titans quarterback Cam Ward still has much to prove, falling to 3-18 as an NFL starter after last week’s 24-18 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The Texans, an early-week seven-point favorite over the Titans, are coming off a heartbreaking 34-30 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Titans coach Robert Saleh has to be itching to get his first win with Nashville.
He says Tennessee is
close, but how close?
Here's our scouting report.
One Houston Texans stat to know
Houston defensive backs Calen Bullock (safety), Jalen Pitre (safety), Kamari Lassiter (cornerback) and Derek Stingley Jr. (cornerback) each had four interceptions last season, the first time that’s happened in the NFL since 2017.
None of them have intercepted a pass this season.
Houston has one of the NFL's best secondaries, and it's due for a takeaway spree at some point.
Where Texans have the edge vs Tennessee Titans
The Titans' defense is OK at 15th in the NFL in total yards allowed (332.5). But ill-timed mistakes have led to explosive plays. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson alone had six explosives (runs of 10-plus yards and passes for 20-plus yards) against the Titans.
Houston has 20 explosive passes and runs combined through four games. The Texans present the second-most productive offense the Titans have faced this season, averaging 343.8 total yards.
Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has thrown for 1,141 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions while netting 7.6 yards per pass on 151 attempts. He was 21-of-31 passing for 347 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 4 against the Cowboys.
Houston’s pass rush is another area of concern for Tennessee, ranking fourth in the NFL with 14 sacks. It’ll be another good gauge of Ward's pocket work.
Where Titans have the edge vs Houston Texans
Houston has allowed 12 sacks, tied for fourth-worst in the NFL.
That’s not a good recipe with Titans All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons on the other side of the ball. Simmons’ 12 pressures are tied for 10th in the league.
Simmons’ 32 pass rushes against the Ravens last week marked his lowest rate (3.1%) since Week 7 of 2025, according to Next Gen Stats. But the Ravens committed to making other Tennessee defensive linemen beat them, and the Titans didn't make them pay for it.
That can't happen this week.
Tennessee needs to fluster Stroud early, keep him off rhythm and find some way to force a turnover. The Titans have just two takeaways in four games.
Score prediction: Titans 24, Texans 21
Saleh’s not wrong. The Titans do feel close to a breakthrough, even if their record doesn't support that.
Ward will take another step this week, go turnover-free and get Saleh his first victory with Tennessee.
