Cancer impacts so many people in Tennessee, whether it’s receiving a diagnosis yourself or standing by a loved one fighting for survival.
But recent major developments could transform the outlook for Tennesseans
living with cancer. A new personalized mRNA-based cancer medicinesucceeded in a late-stage trial for melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer. The vaccine was customized specifically to each patient’s cancer, not only prolonging remission but also stopping the spread of cancer through the rest of the body.

Tennessee is disproportionately impacted by cancer, with thesixth-highest cancer mortality rate across the country. Innovative local clinical research – like the trial hosted in Nashville bySCRI Oncology Partners as part of the broader study for this melanoma treatment – could offer Tennesseans a wider range of options to fight back. If we can beat melanoma, there's reason to believe this technology could apply to other cancers and rare diseases impacting our family and friends.
Lawmakers should champion this kind of innovation and ensure families across Tennessee continue to have access to cutting-edge medical solutions. We need every tool available to stop cancer.
