Who had the best TSSAA football performances from the Nashville area in Week 2?
Each week, we’ll rank the top five Nashville area individual performances and team wins based on statistics, quality of opponents and how wins factor into the Tennessee high school football playoffs.
Top TSSAA football Week 2 individual performances ranked
1. Tot Gardner, Marshall County: Gardner accounted for 249 yards of offense and six touchdowns in a 43-22 shootout win over Shelbyville. He rushed for 166 yards and five TDs on 20 carries and caught six passes for 49 yards. He also threw a 34-yard touchdown.
2. Crews Jenkins, Brentwood Academy: Jenkins nearly hit the 400-yard mark, completing 20-of-26 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns
and had two carries for 18 yards in a 49-14 win over Brentwood.
3. EJ Gibson, Ensworth: Gibson is going off early in the season, adding his second 200-plus-yard rushing performance. He had 260 yards and four TDs on 31 carries in a 35-21 win over Nashville Christian.
4. Colton Overbey, Station Camp: Overbey was 23-of-36 passing for 310 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a TD in a 31-30 loss to Rockvale.
5. JD Stafford, Stratford: Stafford had 24 carries for 219 yards and two touchdowns and added an 11-yard TD reception in a 38-21 win over Stewarts Creek.
Top TSSAA football Week 2 team performances ranked
1. Lipscomb Academy: Who knew the Mustangs would be this far along in Trent Dilfer’s first season back? They went 3-8 last year. They’re 1-1 after defeating Ravenwood on the road, 16-6, nearly pitching a shutout with suffocating defense.
2. Antioch: The Bears and four-star Colorado QB commit Andre Adams defeated a good Class 2A East Nashville team, 28-26, with a late defensive stand. And this is an East Nashville team that took down Class 6A Collierville last week.
3. Pearl-Cohn: The Firebirds defeated CPA 18-13 on Aug. 28, bowing up with a defensive stand late to hold on.
3. Nolensville: The Knights are looking pretty good at 2-0 after a 17-14 win against Summit, courtesy of Matthew Serpas’ winning field goal as time expired.
4. Page: The defending Class 5A champs have everyone wondering who’s No. 1 in that classification right now: Page or Sevier County? Page’s 35-0 shutout over Green Hill earned a point for the Patriots.
5. James Lawson: Don’t look now, but the Lightning are 2-0 in former Tennessee running back Montario Hardesty’s first season as a high school coach after a 25-10 win over Creek Wood.
