A teenager is dead after gunfire broke out between two cars in a vape store parking lot on Jefferson Street on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m.
Nashville police identified the person killed as 19-year-old Donald King, Jr.
No one has been charged, but the three people who survived the shooting were taken to Metro Nashville Police Department headquarters, police said in a news release. Detectives are trying to determine who started the shooting and why, police said.
King already was critically wounded when police arrived to the scene near the intersection of Jefferson Street and D.B. Todd Jr. Boulevard, according to the news release. The two people he had arrived with left and drove to the hospital after the shooting, as did the driver of the other car, police said.
The shooting came after the Mitsubishi SUV that King was in backed into a parking spot next to a Toyota Camry, police said. There was an interaction between the three people in the Mitsubishi and the one person in the Camry, then shots were fired, police said.
The two other people in the Mitsubishi, ages 16 and 20, went to St. Thomas Midtown Hospital, where the 20-year-old was treated for a gunshot wound to his shoulder, police said. The Camry driver, who was 20, drove to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, police said.
After police officers responded, King was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He died shortly after, police said.
Several cruisers and two crime scene unit vans remained at the scene by 9 p.m.
The parking lot of the vape store and gas station next door was empty on early afternoon Sept. 27.
