Blaze Berlowitz, Vanderbilt football's backup quarterback, suffered a broken collarbone after taking a late hit in a loss to Ole Miss, his mother, Melanie Hale-Berlowitz, said on social media.
"Not sure why life has to be so complicated but the hits just keep on coming. Blaze went in at the very end of the game, took a late hit, finished the series knowing something was not right. Bad news is: He broke his collar bone and will be having surgery on Monday," Berlowitz wrote in a Facebook post.
Blaze Berlowitz has appeared in five games this season, starting three. He is 28-for-53 passing for 386 yards and a touchdown, and has run 25 times for 110 yards. He started the first two games against Austin Peay and Delaware before losing the job to 5-star
freshman Jared Curtis, but he also started the Georgia game when Curtis was out with an injury.
Whit Muschamp and Jack Elliott have both seen limited snaps at quarterback behind Berlowitz. Muschamp attempted two passes against Georgia and likely would take Berlowitz's place as the backup.
Berlowitz came in late to Vanderbilt's 52-17 loss to Ole Miss at FirstBank Stadium and led a touchdown drive. He was 2-for-5 passing for 18 yards, and ran four times for 23 yards.
Ole Miss was given an unnecessary roughness penalty for a hit on Berlowitz after a run play at the Rebels' 12-yard line. After that, Berlowitz attempted one more pass that was incomplete, then handed off twice.
Melanie Berlowitz went viral over the weekend after she said in a Diego Pavia stream that, "A bunch of clowns running this football program."
