On Sept. 24, 2026, Mishawn Thomas, 20, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, and Giavon Hayes, 21, pleaded guilty to attempted felonious assault in connection with the Nov. 14, 2024, shooting death of Darnell Brown-Jones, 18.
Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Chris Brown sentenced Thomas to 13-18 years in prison and Hayes to five years in prison.

Columbus man arrested, another still at-large in fatal Near East Side shooting
Two Columbus men have been charged with murder in connection with the fatal Nov. 14 shooting of an 18-year-old on the city's Near East Side.
Giavon Hayes, 19, of the Hilltop area, and Mishawn Thomas, 18, of the Mount Vernon neighborhood, each face one count of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Darnell Brown-Jones on Nov. 14. Columbus police
officers responding around 10:30 p.m. that day on a report of a shooting in the 900 block of Eton Grove found Brown-Jones suffering from a gunshot wound.
Medics pronounced Brown-Jones died at the scene at 10:38 p.m.
Homicide detectives said in probable cause affidavits they were able to identify Hayes and Thomas through surveillance footage and witness statements. Detectives do not say whether it was Thomas or Hayes who shot Brown-Jones.
Hayes was arrested on Tuesday and had his arraignment Wednesday morning, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records. Thomas was reported still at-large Wednesday night.
