New Albany, a once-rural suburb of Columbus redefined by the vision of Columbus retail magnate Les Wexner, has been among the early frontiers in reimagining Ohio as what civic and business leaders call the "Silicon Heartland."
State and local governments have offered incentives worth millions of dollars to attract data centers that will serve as the backbone of an emerging artificial intelligence boom. Warehouses and factories also dot the landscape of the New Albany International Business Park, a key economic engine for the city and the region.
Those data centers are in addition to the $28 billion Intel project to construct microchip manufacturing facilities, which have progressed slowly as the company seeks potential buyers for its chips.
